Antigonish for Voice and Piano (2024) is an art song based on the poem Antigonish by William Hughes Mearns (1875-1965). The poem is named after a town in Nova Scotia where a house is said to have been haunted by a little man who wasn’t there. Pervasive throughout the piece – and the poem – is a fascination with what is and isn’t there. There are moments incongruent with expectation, that hang in the air unsettled, as if one was in a staring contest with an empty stairway. In those moments, something is(n’t) there and it is(n’t) looking down at you.
